Strange as I don't really use bookmarks, I like 'comments' much better
for my needs. So don't know how they got there to begin with!

Bookmarks and comments serve entirely different purposes. Some bookmarks are
inserted by Word (when you create a TOC, cross-reference, etc.), but they
are hidden, so you'll never see the brackets for those.
