why would a document (lots of tables and figures) keep switching
captions from figures to tables and vice versa....

using Word 2000

it keeps changing the name Figure to Table and Table to Figure.

When is this happening? Is your installation set up to insert a
caption when you insert a table or figure? Or are you using
Insert/Caption?

I fixed it.  I was using Insert/Caption.  But, I tried to change Figure
to Table, and then ALL the captions changed.

When you select a caption and use the Caption dialog box to pick a
different label, Word assumes that you want to change all captions of
the selected type.

If you want to replace a single caption, just delete it and insert the
desired one (or manually alter the field code).
