Autoformatting is not formatting, even though it is on.

Hi, I've been editing an immense document. Autoformatting has been on,
replacing "--" with em dash and straight quotes with curly. Seemingly
out of the blue, the autoformatting has stopped working. I checked, and
it is still on, and both options are still selected. I had not made any
changes to the styles or anything. Once second it was making the
changes and the next second it wasn't. I tried turning the option off
and on again. Tried closing and opening the document. Restarted the
computer.

Both "autoformat" and "autoformat as you type" have the correct boxes
checked.

Any suggestions?

Well, It just started working again, just as suddenly and seemingly
randomly, as it stopped working... I would still appreciate any
insight, for when it happens again (as it surely will!).
