I'm using Word 2000 on Windows 2000.

In a Word template, is there a way to limit the Styles that are shown
when a user clicks the Styles drop-down box?

For example, for the Headings, I only want Heading 1, Heading 2, Heading
3, and Heading 4 to appear. (I want to hide the other headings.) I want
to hide other types of Styles completely (e.g., the "TOC*" the "Index*"
Styles).

Is this possible?

You can do this in Word 2002, not in Word 2000.
