My large documents have gray brackets (within my black
text) that cannot be edited or removed in pairs at
several points. I am not able to isolate the
circumstances that cause Word 2002 to insert the brackets
or duplicate their creation. Does anyone know how to
remove these brackets?!?

Susan,

They are likely bookmarks.  You can hide display of bookmarks with
Tools>Options>View>Show and uncheck bookmarks.
