Hi -
I'm looking for an adequate way to print many pages (4, 8,
or 16) of a book on one sheet, arranged so that the sheet
can be folded and cut into gatherings for a book. It is not
a complicated thing to program, but neither Word nor any
other word processing program does it properly (that I can
find), nor do the big publishing programs: they rely on
fancy plug-ins. I've been told there's a version of Word
with a book-printing attachment or feature. What is it? Or
are there any commercial or shareware plug-ins that do this?

Word 2003 has that ability, but I haven't tested it to see if it really
works correctly. However, for some good information on this, try the
following FAQ...

"Quite Imposing" would be a commercial tool for you to evaluate ...

plantetPDF has a lot of good articles in that area, too.

The article Terry referred you to (and Word's "Book fold" feature in Word
2002) will format booklets, but it will not do the kind of imposition you
are talking about. For this you require high-end imposition software. A
Google search for "imposition software" turns up quite a few products.
