I had previously posted this problem, but got no response, so I thought of
posting it with a different subject that may attract a reply.

A friend of mine is having problems with Word, which he thinks is a virus.
Here's his description:
When he points on the Word icon on his desktop, it seems to disappear.
When he activates it, certain random characters are written, it writes "If"
from the beginning and other stuff, then deletes it, and starts over
again...
Anyone familiar with this?

Does the problem occur if your friend starts Word from the Windows start
menu > run with the command Winword /a ?
If that stops it - then rename normal.dot to oldnormal.dot and remove any
add-ins from the Word and Office startup folders. The Word startup folder is
defined in tools > options > file locations > startup. The Office startup is
at \Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office(10)\Startup.
