I am in the process of working on a long document that I
need to cut and paste into other documents.  When I scroll
and copy using my track pad it copies the entire document
from where I started copying.  How can  I slow the
vertical scrolling?

Click at the beginning of the selection, then navigate to the end of the
selection with scroll bar or PgUp PgDn and SHIFT+click at the end.

PgUp/PgDn won't work because they move the insertion point. You have to use
the elevator on the vertical scroll bar.
