Entering text into a table once document is "locked"

I have a document that uses text fields and is used in
the protected mode so that the users may toggle between
the fields and enter their text without disturbing other
text.  This is working okay, except for a few fields that
i would like to have the ability to spell check and/or
change the font characteristics, while the form is
still "locked".  i have the ability to lock/unlock this
form and was attempting to use a table (using one large
cell) to enter the text, therefore giving it the ability
to be spell checked on the fly.
The problem is when I "lock" the file, using the padlock
icon, I lose the ability to tab to or click to the cell
field.  Word will only let me go between the text fields
and not access the cell/table or text box.  If I click on
one of them, the field jumps to the next text field box.
Also, I have added the "font" and "font size" buttons to
the "forms" toolbar and they become grayed out when the
form is in protected state, therefore not allowing me to
use bold text etc. while in a text field.
Could someone give me some options here to allow me to
enter text in a template that will keep the protected
fields while allowing me to type free text that can be
altered and spell checked.
Thanks in advance.

You can insert section breaks in the document and protect just specific
sections for forms, but protecting any part of a document for forms disables
a number of features (including spell checking) in the entire document. But
see http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/MacrosVBA/SpellcheckProtectDoc.htm
