OH, HELP PLEASE HELP.  I talked a co-worker into requesting her Word 2000 be
upgraded to Word 2002.  After the new load today, whenever she opend
existing docs using existing templates (created in Word 2000) she is getting
bullets on the Styles that didn't have bullets and no bullets where they
used to be.  I feel responsible, but can't figure out what is happening,
even though I have 2002 also!!!   We've got huge projects due and everyone
is yelling at us!!!!

What happens if you press Ctrl+A, Ctrl+Q?

My apologies I think I accidently sent my reply to email address.  Here it
is again, in essence.  Nothing really changes in the text or the style when
doing Ctrl A(Edit) CtrolQ(Reset Paragraph).  All styles are based on No
Style to untie any link to another style, In Templates and Add-ins Update
Styles in Doc is unchecked.  I can make this aberration happen by creating a
New doc with the template, formatting text with the styles in questions and
saving.  Then when I check Auto Update Styles in Template and Add-ins Word
changes the styles in my doc.  By unchecking Auto Update I can put the style
back to what it was. I think that tells me something but I'm clueless as to
what!  Also, when I close the file and reopen it Word changes my styles.
I am truly in dire need. I've got huge deadlines tomorrow and am just lost
on this.  Thanks for any help!

"Automatically update" in a style and "Automatically update document styles"
in the Tools | Templates and Add-ins dialog are death on numbered/bulleted
styles.

But that is what is soooo confusing!!!! Several of these styles are NOT
numbered or bulleted, Word is making them that way, (granted a couple ARE
bulleted and those change to numbers and vice versa.) But why do some styles
not change at all, and only others?  I'm pretty good at sleuthing, but would
love some ideas of where I might dig this out.  BTW, it has to be associated
with the template I would think because I get the same behavior fromt he
template that my co-worker does on her PC.

Hi Wana

I think you need to treat that template as corrupt - I suspect you won't dig
out any precise 'reason' apart from a general idea that Word is shuffling
styles and especially style - numbering links around. When Word updates
styles, it seems to also import all list templates from the template, and it
is probably some old and unused list template that is doing the damage - but
there is nothing you can do about this.

To solve you co-worker's immediate problem, she needs to put the template
somewhere it can't be found (or temporarily rename it), open the document
(when hopefully there will be no template found to update styles from) and
uncheck the 'Update styles' box. Leave it unchecked - even with a perfectly
sound template there are other problems it can cause, and if you want to
update styles after a template change you can do so explicitly (no
guarantees on numbered styles, however).

Then remake the template afresh in Word 2002.
