Hi Tony,
I'm not sure what happened, either, but I do know you can't
get rid of a Char style by simply applying the original
style over it. For one thing, the two are linked together,
so any changes you make in the one (including deleting it!)
will be made to the other.
There's a macro on my website (in the Tips section, I
believe) that will help you get rid of a Char style by first
unlinking it from the original paragraph style.
And, in order to avoid creating CHAR styles, be careful to
always select entire paragraphs (or nothing at all) when
applying paragraph styles.
