For some reason, Word 97 has switched my opening and
closing quotes.  Is there any way to switch them back?

Hi

I am assuming your quotes are not working correctly in any file you edit or
create. If this is the case, then I would like you to launch Word in  /a
mode and see if the quotes work correctly, if they do then you'll want to
follow the steps below to recreate the settings to put Word's defaults
back.

To launch Word in /a mode:
Click Start, choose Run and type "Winword /a" (without the quotes) and
click OK
Here is a KB article on how to do this as well:

Word
         http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;121709

If running Word in this mode corrects the problem, you want to Rename the
Normal template and delete the data key in the registry, you can try one at
a time until the problem is corrected.

Please refer to the following article for information on how to do this.

Settings

I hope this information resolves your issue.
