I have a Word 2000 document that crashes on me when I
create a numbered list with the Numbering button, then
move some numbered items to the right with the Increase
Indent button, then select the moved items and click the
Bullets button.

Document stats:
57 pages long
2, 393K
About 40 gifs
Lots of short numbered lists
Lots of bulleted items (some embedded in numbered lists)

What is the problem? Do I need to omit the graphics?
Manually number the lists? Avoid bullets? Avoid embedding
bullets in lists? The complete document is suppose to be
about 180 pages. (I'm converting from FrameMaker to Word
via RTF to Notes.)

I've read that Word 2000 should handle 32 Meg and 10,000
pages. What gives?

(I also sent this to Word@MVPS.org. I'm desperate!)

Thanks.

Hi Kate,

I'd say: either don't apply numbering to the lines that
should be bulleted OR set up an outlined numbering list
"style" and apply that, so that Increase Indent
automatically applies the bullets (next outline level).

But it would likely be best to start over in a new
document, at this point, since your current document has
become unstable. Select your numbered lists, go to
Format/Bullets and Numbering and set the numbering to
"None". Select all the text EXCEPT the last paragraph mark
and copy/paste to a new document.

Now go back into Format/Bullets and numbering/Outline and
create a numbering preview (use the Customize button) that
looks the way you want it (number at level 1, bullet at
level 2, using the indent settings you prefer). Apply this
to the numbered lists; in order to create the bulleted
items, select those paragraphs after numbering them and
press Shift+Alt+Right Arrow.
