Having finally(!) resolved (almost) all of the issues
involved with ceating a master document (actually a master
of master documents) I would like to save it as a
completely assembled product. That is, someone who opens
the document would see the finished document and not need
to have any access to the subdocuments. Is this possible,
or do I have to resort to PDF?

Resort to PDF. Or use the "Delete" function on all the
subdocuments (which actually makes them part of the Master).
Or start over again and use the IncludeText field instead of
the Master/Subdocument functionality.
