Is it possible for me to configure right-click context
menu?

If so, how to do?
[Please tell me step-by-step, thanks !!]
Greg Maxey - 18 Nov 2003 23:20 GMT

Hi.
I'm afraid it's not what I want.

I would like to change the context menu which is accessed
by right-click.

Is it possible?

Hi Wai

Customizing context menus is indeed possible, and it is covered in passing
in the article Greg pointed you at. The process is very easy, (just like
customizing an ordinary menu, apart from using the shortcut menu toolbar to
give you the menu to customize) but you will find it very tedious unless you
have just a few specific contexts to change.

For step by step instructions, see "Customize a shortcut menu" in the Word
Help - enter "context menu customize" in the answer wizard.

The context menu is also called the "shortcut menu." See step 2(c) of
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Customization/AsgnCmdOrMacroToToolbar.htm (as
well as the note to step 4).

Yes, I know it.
But it is still not what I know.

Maybe I should further clarify myself.

What I need is a fully customized right-click menu (ie a
right-click menu which is created by me completely, not
based on built-in right-click menu).

The reason why I wish to do so is simply MVPs tell me it
is the best (they once said customizing your toolbars by
creating new ones, not modify from bulti-in toolbars).

By the way, however after a whole day for me to create
tons of "newborn" customized toolbars, I found some
problems which might defy me from doing so.

Sample of problem:
- When I push the drawing icon to call the drawing
toolbar out, the built-in will be called, instead of
my "newborn" drawing toolbar.

Pros of "newborn" customized toolbar
- easy to translate between files
- if normal.dot is lost, still can transfer them from
other templates

Pros of built-in toolbars
- lots of work saved in "copying" the existing components
of built-in toolbars
- no problems between the links of some icnons and
toolbars (eg the case - icon to call out drawing toolbar)

Now I am in a dilemma. Should I keep building
all "newborn" customized toolbars, or should I just
add/modify under built-in toolbars?

I don't believe it is possible to create a totally new shortcut menu, that
is, to create a new context. You can save modifications in a global
template, however. I think I see what you're trying to do, however, and here
is the approach I would take. When you want to add commands to a menu or
toolbar, save those changes (to the built-in toolbar, not a new one) in a
global template. Those additions will then be added to the toolbars and
menus displayed by Normal.dot. When you want to remove commands, save the
changes to Normal.dot (because removing them in a global template will not,
I suspect, override Normal.dot); you'll still have to remove them again if
you have to regenerate Normal.dot, but that's less work than adding new
buttons/menu items.
