Hanging Indent causes ALL paragraphs to indent

Everytime I do a hanging indent all the other paragraphs
in my document indent. If I do ctrl-z than the other
paragraphs return to normal accept the one I indented.
This workaround worked for a while but now whenever I do a
hanging indent Word hangs. And, now the document
formatting is all messed up. HELP!!
