How can I tell MS Word to calcuate the total of a
numbering list?

Eg:
There are ? kinds of solutions.
1. XXX
2. YYY
3. ZZZ

? = 3  [MS Word will re-calculate the total when I
insert/delete a point]

Insert | Reference | Cross-reference to Paragraph number of Numbered item
(and select the last one from the list). If you delete the last item or add
a new one after it, however, you'll need to reinsert the cross-reference, so
this might not be any improvement over inserting the number manually.
