RD fields

When I try to use RD fields to create TOC, Index, etc.,
more often than not I get an error message: "The document
name or path is invalid. Try one of these suggestions.
*Check the file permissions for the document or drive.
*Use the file open dialogue to locate the document.
(C\...\directory name\filename)"

Word 2000
NT OS

In our shop we generally copy docs to our local C drive to
work on them, and return them to the network drive at the
end of the day.

I've tried using the /f relative path switch; opening all
the docs with Word's File|Open before refreshing the
TOC/Index. But I still get this error message. Please Help.

Hi Marym,

The correct syntax for an RD field would be something like:
{RD "C:\\...\\directory name\\filename.doc"}
where you spell out the full path and use double
backslashes for the folder separators.

Cheers

Thanks macropod.
I have seen this format suggested, but if the TOC is going
to remain in the same "relative" directory as the
documents the RD fields are referencing, isn't it possible
to use a simpler format, e.g. {rd "chapter name"}?

We move our source documents to and from our local "C
drives" to a network drive during production and the
pathnames are invariably quite different.

(It's this kind of trouble that makes me miss FrameMaker.)

Allegedly, simply using the file name works if you use the \f switch
and keep the TOC document and the chapter documents in the same
directory (not "same relative"). If you don't meet these constraints
it probably will not work.

If you need to move the source documents to a different folder, Word will
have trouble finding them, even if the target document is moved to the same
folder. If this is an issue, check out:

(url all one line)
where you can download a Word file with a utility macro to update the links.
