I have a problem using Word 2003 with Outlook Contacts
list. When I try to insert an address onto an envelope in
Word, I get a "Mapi Spooler cannot be started" error. I
have to copy an address from Outlook and paste it.  If
I "repair" Office , it works correctly for a while, then
reverts. What's the matter?

Is outlook always set as your default mail client?

No, it isn't, because I prefer OE. Does that mean that
this functionality of adding an address isn't available to
me in Word?

not unless you change outlook to the default when you want to add addresses.
