I have an excel spreadsheet with a total time field and when I use it in the
format {mergefield tot_time \# "0.00;(0.00)"} I get 55.0 for one of the
participants instead of 5.50 when the excel data is 5:50. What do I need to
do to correct this. 8:00 shows correctly as 8.00.

I'm not that familiar with Excel time data so don't know how you would get a
negative time, but if the time is being displayed as 5:50 then it is
arguably 5 hours 50 and "5.50" is arguably the wrong way to display it.

If the data in Excel is formatted as a time, you will need to use a
date/time switch (e.g. \@ "h:mm" or \@ "h.mm" ) to display it.
