ODBC Datasource Problems

Hi, I hope this is the right place for my questions.
I set up my ODBC drivers, I am connecting to a FileMAker Database here are
the issues I'm having:
1. It takes a very long time to connect Sometimes after several minutes of
Word not responding it does connect and sometimes I get an error application
message and get kicked out. It asks if I want to send a report.
2. I have made changes to my database to test so I'm now  connecting to a
table not in any relationships it still takes a LONG time, then sometimes
kicks me out. Is there anyway to speed it up? What do I need to change to not
get kicked out? I saw there was a quick fix but it does not look like it is
for this issue.
3. Once I get the above working, is there a way I specify the fields I
want to pull before I connect to the data source make it faster? Right now
it looks like I must first connect to the datasource, then I see all the
fields available and only then I can select which ones I want.
4. Can I save a query or automate it so I only have to enter the new field
criteria? I need to be able to do this from the word side and not the
database side. I want to be able to just enter a different record number each
time I go in and just merge for that record.

Thank you for any assistance.
