If my MS Word 2003 document has Fields, how to add a macro?

If my MS Word 2003 document has Fields, how to add a macro?

I am trying to add a macro to a document that contains Fields.  It seems
that "Tools / Macro / Record new macro" is disabled.

Probably because you have the document protected.
