When merging to a new document I receive a message that Word found locked
fields during the update...Word cannot update locked fields. To my knowledge
I did not lock any fields. What am I doing wrong? How can I rectify this
problem?

This is probably a result of the probem described in the following article:

(even if you are using Word 2003)
