I have an excel data source attached to a word doc.  I am trying to
disconnect the data source from the doc but can't figure it out.

I think you open the document then go to edit\links and break the link
Let me know if that works

If it is Word 2002/2003, either open the Mail Merge Task Pane, go to the
first pane and select the "Normal Word Document" option or enable the Mail
Merge toolbar (e.g. using Tools|Customize), click the first icon on it, and
select "Normal Word Document.

In earlier versions of Word, open the Mail Merge Helper and do the same
thing in the first step of the Helper.
