Are there any issues with the main mail merge document containing a link to
a .doc file that also contains merge fields?

I created a mail merge document and added a link to another file using the
menu's Insert/File and selected the 'Insert as link' option. Everything
seems to work fine but I wanted to find out if there are any problems or if
there is a better way to do this.
