I'm getting really frustrated with mail merge. I get an untyped space before
the first line in my address in both letters and labels. I tried entering my
own fields, but the address block keeps replacing them (in each line) when I
merge they change to "address block" and I get three copies of each address,
one after another.

If you haven't done so already I would open your mail merge main document
and click Alt-F9 so that you are seeing the underlying field codes (which
are surrounded by special {} characters) before trying to remove or change
them. If you don't, it's possible to have the illusion that you are changing
the field code when in fact you are just editing their results.

You are doing something unnecessary if the fields that you are inserting
manually are being changed to three address blocks.  Just what actions are
you taking?  List them one by one so that we can try and determine where it
is that you are going wrong.
