Tip: Looking for answers? Try searching our database.

Hi.

A colleague has got a strange problems that's just occurred.

He is using a network database as the source, and when creating a
merge, the "Insert merge fields" option does not bring down the list
of fields.

The weird thing is, trying this on another PC in the office with
exactly the same datasource works fine (the datasource has previously
been used on PC number 1 without problem).

To make things slightly worse, setting up a mail merge from scratch on
PC number 1, creating a word document table as the datasource, again
the "Insert merge fields" option does nothing.

Is there anything that might be worth checking ?

Check for the existence of a macro named InsertMergeField in the normal.dot
template, the template being used for the main document or in an add-in (a
template that is located in the Word Startup folder)

Perhaps try renaming the normal.dot template to normal.old and restart Word.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info Doug, I'll pass this on. Though, I do believe that
somehow the normal.dot template is also shared for the users. Not sure
how this works over a network.

You cannot share the Normal.dot file among multiple users in Word

Thanks for everyone's help.

Just to update, it seemed like it could have been a network problem
with PC number 1. After being turned off overnight, a retry without
doing anything different worked as expected.

You still need to sort out that normal.dot sharing error!
