If you are merging from a number field, use a numeric format switch, e.g. in
the Mail Merge Main document, use Alt-F9 to show the field codes then change
{ MERGEFIELD mynumber \*Mergeformat }
to
{ MERGEFIELD mynumber \#"$,0.00" \*Mergeformat }
