I downloaded stamps.com, but when I go to mail merge in Word, it keeps saying
I need to download the software.

The following message from February 2006 may help:

-------------------------------------------------------------
I have read through this group and found this question several times, (that
word does not recognize stamps.com software) and the answers are always to
check with stamps.com help center.
I did, and would like to post their answer, as it took me a couple days to
get an answer back from them. I hope it helps somebody!
"To enable the plug-in for Microsoft Word:
1. Make sure Word is closed.
2. Log in to Stamps.com, and click on Help at the top of your Stamps.com
software.
3. Click on Download Plug-ins, and choose the Plug-ins tab at the top of the
next screen.
4. Place a check in the box next to your version of Microsoft Word, then
click Next.
The software will install the plug-in and may ask you to restart Stamps.com.
You should now see a Stamps.com icon in your Word toolbar.
This link provides step-by-step instructions on how to use Stamps.com with
Microsoft Office:
http://www.stamps.com/tools/microsoft/
There you will see exactly what to do, along with pictures of what the
software screens look like while performing these tasks.

Is there an solution if your version of Word is not in that list from the
download plug-in's.   We use Word 2003 and my download plug-in list only
shows Word 97.  I did attempt to use that version and got and error stating
it couldn't use it .  Any suggestions?

Unfortunately I can't tell for sure, as I'm in the UK and don't use
stamps.com (and nor do many people who post replies here, which is why I
copied someone else's post)

However, when I go to the stamps.com page in the link, I see a link to a
"how to do it with Word 2003 page" at

http://www.stamps.com/support/features/integrations/microsoft/office2003/

That tells me

"you need to upgrade to the newest version of Stamps.com. Click here for
instructions."

and that link leads to the downloads. When I download and start the
installation, the version I have has install options for:
"Microsoft Word 2000, 2002 and 2003 Application Support"

at the top of the list (Lotus WordPro 2000, Corel WordPerfect 12, Microsoft
Outlook 2000, 2002 and 2003, Microsoft Word 97, Corel WordPerfect 8, Corel
WordPerfect 9, Lotus WordPro 97 are also listed, along with support for a
number of address books).

So my guess is that you might have downloaded an older version, or perhaps
the download didn't complete, or you have tried to install the old version
again, or some such. But I haven't taken it further than that so am not
completely sure.
