I am trying to merge Excel data into Word 2003 and am having problems getting
the percents to display properly.  Many of the threads here (such as
http://www.microsoft.com/office/community/en-us/default.mspx?dg=microsoft.public
.word.mailmerge.fields&tid=c1bd0656-d66d-46c0-a23e-1115e1381ffa&cat=en-us-office
-word&lang=en&cr=US&sloc=en-us&m=1&p=1
)
are getting me close to solving the problem, but I'm still not quite there.
If I type MERGEFIELD "Average" *100 /# "##.##%" I get  the correct decimal
answer with a percent sign (ie .63%).  It seems like it should be a simple
correction to get 63% instead of .63, and any help will be greatly
appreciated.

Try

{ ={ MERGEFIELD Average }*100 \# "##.##%" }

where each pair of {} is a pair of the special "field braces" you can insert
using ctrl-F9 (and ensure you're using \, not /)
