My zip code field on the mail merge drops leading zeroes, why?

My zip code field on the mail merge drops leading zeroes, why?

In Excel, that column is formatted as the special field "Zip Code" and the
leading zeroes are there.  Why in Word does the mail merge drop the leading
zeroes?
