I want to do a mail merge with place cards - the name on both sides of card
with one of the names being upside down.  As far as I know I can't do mail
merge with text box (rotated text).

You can rotate the content of adjacent table cells left & right. Create or
use a suitable label format for the base structure. You will have to remove
every second Next record field to ensure you get the same info in two
adjacent cells and it helps after propagating (and before removing the
surplus Next record fields) to change the document type to Letter.
