I have a membership app form that needs to be filled in for each of the
current members, for a renewal letter.
The master app form, with database field names, was created last year but I
need to run it against the current membership list.

I select:
Tools/Mail Merge
Create/Form letters
Active Window
Get Data/Open Data Source
browse to the Access database, click "open"
and at this point, it freezes

When you open the database in Access directly, do you see any dialog boxes
(e.g. a database password dialog box?)

If so, when you connect from Word 2000 and the database is not already open,
Access will display that box - but sometimes it is hidden behind Word, and
Word looks as if it has hung. In that case you can Alt-tab to find the
dialog box.

That's where I'd start, anyway.
