Locked Fields In Mail Merge

When I finalize my mail merge, I receive a message that says there are
locked fields in the merge than cannot be updated.  How do I find which
fields/ words are locked and unlock them all?  I created the merge from a
basic letter and I am unaware of any locked fields.

Thanks in advance!

Which version of Word?

What types of field do you have in your document?

If you use Alt-F9 to show the field codes (so you see e.g. { MERGEFIELD
xyz } ) does any of them have "\!" in them?

Try selecting the whole document and using ctrl-shift-F11 to unlock all the
fields prior to merging.

Word 2002.  I did the Alt + F9 and no ! in my fields.  I have fields that I
created such as Name, Address, Contract Number, Job #, License #, etc.  No
fields from the merge template itself.

Did you try this?

I did (sorry, I forgot to tell you that in my previous reply) and I'm still
getting the same thing.  It merges anyway and my document looks to be
complete...

OK, to be sure, you have to select the /entire/ document (control-A may be
enough, I'm not sure). i.e. you may need to select headers/footers, any text
boxes etc. which contain fields, and use ctrl-shift-F11 to unlock fields.

If you have any graphics in your document, you may also have the problem
mentioned in

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;292155

but if so, as far as I know it doesnt't quite tell the whole story.

Great, thanks Peter.  I appreciate the feedback.
