Mail Merge Printing Problem

I have merged a word document with an excel database. However, when i print
the merged fields are being printed/displayed with a 'grey' background.

Can anyone help

You are not actually executing the merge, but are printing a preview of the
results.  If you execute the merge, there will be no mergefields in the
output.
