Does anyone know why every 9th mail merge entry disappears
after performing my merge?

Do you have 8 entries per page?

If you have a mail merge main document with multiple entries per page, you
will have multiple <<Next record> ({ NEXT}) fields per page. Typically, you
should have one <<Next record>> field for every entry in your mail merge
main document /except/ the first entry on the page. i.e., if yur first entry
has a <<Next record>> field before it, delete that field.
