I have created my master document in word, selected the excel file to merge
with, and inserted my merge fields.  When I merge the word document with the
excel file the currency that is merging from excel to word no longer appears
as currency, it appears as a regular number.  Ex.  Excel $18,002.06 - Word
18002.06  How can I fix this problem?

MC,
Graham Mayor has an excellent site about switches:
http://www.gmayor.com/formatting_word_fields.htm

For your situation you should add the following switch for the currency
mergefield:

{mergefield total \# "$,0.00;($,0.00)"}

The website Rich/rerat has excellent information on several formating issues
that arise when merging with an excel document.
