Merge with Word & Excel

How can you merge more than 26 items between Word & Excel?

Sounds like you are doing a label type mail merge and have not actually
executed the merge.  Rather, you are just previewing the result.

If that is not the case, I would be looking for some problem with the 27th
record in your data source.
