I have a data source that is 14,000 records. Whenever I try to merge it with
my main document, Word is crashing. Is it reasonable to be able to merge this
many records in Word 2003? Or do we have to split the data source into parts?

I would try splitting it.  There have been reports of problems with more
that several thousand records.  Another thing that you should do is uncheck
the Background printing option under Tools>Options>Print.

Hope this helps.
