For the SQL issue, see the following Knowledge Base article:

If the second problem still occurs, check under Tools>Options>General in
Word to see if there is a check mark against the "Confirm conversions at
open" item. If so, remove it and try again.

Thanks Doug -- I'll make the register db changes as suggested.
Solved the .odc specification problem simply by respecifying the Access
merge table.
