My TOC field picks up paragraphs with style Heading 1 in a table here (using
Word 2000).
Which version of Word are you using?
Is your TOC field definitely set up to grab Heading 1 style paragraphs?
(e.g. the default TOC field here looks like
{ TOC \o "1-3" \h \z }
which should pick up Heading 1,2 and 3 styles)

Thanks again Peter. I am in Word 2002 and have definately
got the toc set for heading 1. my field is definately
formatted as heading 1 - i have double checked by
formatting another field outside of the table the same
way the toc is updated with that one. in any case i have
since deleted it as time is short on this one.
Thanks very much
