hello,

What choices to I have to make the merged fields appear in a fixed location?

I tried putting them inside a text box, but I can't get it to work. ( it
looks like my text boxes disappear) I can't use a table because I have no
room across the page.

What choices to I have to make the merged fields appear in a fixed location?

I am not sure what you mean by "no room across the page".  The usual way to
fix the position of something is to use a table with fixed cell dimensions.
