MS Office Forum / Word / Mailmerge and Fax / January 2004Mail Merge Tool Bar/Mail Merge Helper missing
We got the ms.blast.exe virus and removed it with anti- virus software. Ever since the virus, the Mail Merge Tool Bar and Mail Merge Helper in Tools cannot be found. We tried to customize a Mail Merge Tool Bar, as well as follow instructions in Help and MS website and were unsuccessful Hi Gena, I'm not familiar with any of those instructions, so it's impossible to know what you've already tried... Did you try resetting the menu bar in Tools/Customize/Toolbars? Word as part of Works is different, and the mail merge is taken care of by a special Addin. See, for example, this Knowledge Base article WD2000: Works 2000 Adds Functionality to Word 2000 [Q241758] http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=241758 If you want to use Word as part of Works suite, you need to ask in a Works newsgroup how you should start and work with Word. It contains the basic toolbar, menu and keyboard settings. When you rename the Normal.dot on your computer to NormalOLD.dot Word will generate an installation default copy, and this usually brings back any missing menu commands. We had a Word expert fix the problem. The correct solution is Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 269281. If microsoft.public.works.win is such a superior NG, why didn't you post your *Works* problem there? The advice that Cindy gave you was spot on: if you are starting a merge from Works, you need to ask in a Works NG. This is very different from completing a merge from within Word. And if you aren't planning to start a Word mail merge from within Works, then you need to uninstall the add-in. Most of us here know little about Works or Works Suite except that the Microsoft Works Suite Add-in for Word causes untold problems in Word run freestanding, which is the way most Works Suite owners use it (having bought Works Suite because that is the cheapest way to get Word). -- Suzanne S. I really prefer to try to help people who ask off-topic questions, if I can, rather than just saying "you're posting in the wrong place", but this kind of reaction makes me more inclined to not waste my time... Thank heavens most seekers are more aware and gracious! Cindy I am familiar with the work of Suzanne Barnhill and Cindy Meister, from the Word newsgroups. I have used posts from both to aid myself greatly. I have serious difficulties understanding computereze, but Suzanne and Cindy are among those I can understand, and I have used their help, along with that of other MVPs, often and in detail.
