I am using an excel spreadsheet that get's e-mailed to me as the data
source for a form in Word. The first column contains the reference
number, and should be in the format CHP000S000M.

The person at the other end has set this custom format up in Excel so
that they only have to type in the numbers, eg although the cell shows
CHP123S456M when you import to Word, it will only show 123456.

Is it possible to recreate this format in Word, or would I have to
manually change them?

Regards

Hi Andrew,

In your mergefield, add the following picture switch before any other
switches:
\# "CHP000S000M"
so that your field looks something like:
{MERGEFIELD Data \# "CHP000S000M"}

Cheers
PS: The 0s are zeros, not letters O.
