Labels printing wrongly

I'm using Word 2000. I must be doing something wrong but I've no idea what.

I have some non-brand labels so I have set up a custom label for them. I
carefully measured all the dimensions (which I have checked several times).
For your info the dimensions are:

Top Margin 1.3cm
Side Margin 0.7cm
Vertical pitch 3.4cm (no vertical gap between the labels)
Horizontal pitch 6.6cm
Label height 3.4cm
Label width 6.4cm
Number across 3
Number down 8

The page size is set to A4 in the both the Label setting and the Page setup.

When I print a full sheet of the same label as a test, the text is not
printed correctly on the labels. For example, the third column of labels
misses the start of the address.

Also, the first row of labels cuts the bottom of the address off, and the
last row cuts the top off.

I have double checked these settings and it still comes out wrong. What
should I do to fix the problem?

Custom labels are generally a battle between the measurements and the
printer driver, but a good plan is to add the labels to a new document from
the label wizard. Select the table and add a border round all the cells.
Print on a plain sheet of A4 paper. Hold the paper over your label blanks
and you can immediately see where the labels are wrong. Juggle the margin
and pitch settings until you can produce a sheet of labels which closely
mimics the underlying label sheet. It is usually the margins that are wrong
because you have not accounted for the non-printing area of the printer.

These sound like Viking L24-100 labels, in which case try the following
settings as a start point:

Top Margin 0.9cm
Side Margin 0.7cm
Vertical pitch 3.5cm (no vertical gap between the labels)
Horizontal pitch 6.6cm
Label height 3.5cm
Label width 6.4cm
Number across 3
Number down 8

Hi Dd5,

Basically, what Word is doing when it creates a label sheet is setting up a
table. If I follow your instructions, the table / page of labels it generates
appears to be correct. Are you just making a page of labels (Envelopes and
Labels) or doing a mail merge?

The most common causes for what you report are
1) a "buggy" Avery label wizard
2) a problem with the printer driver

What kind of printer are you using? If you set up a printer in Windows using a
more generic driver, such as HP Laserjet II, do you get a different result?

How about downloading an updated Avery label Wizard from the Avery website?
