We are merging an excel spreadsheet to a directory form in
Word and one of the columns changes to numeric when
connected.  The column is formatted general in excel, some
of the records have numbers like "123" and other have
combos like "123 MM".  When connected to excel I can see
that the records with "123 MM" have been changed to "0".
I have tried formatting the field in word to text, but I
still get the zero's when connecting to the datbase.

Try formatting the entire column in Excel as text and reconnecting from
Word.
