UK date formats from Excel to Word

Our Excel file is set up with date fields dd/mm/yy.  When this is merged into our Excel file it gets converted to MM/dd/YY.  It happens during the mailmerge transfer (the preview table shows it incorrectly). All our date  formats (as far as we can see) are formatted to dd/mm/yy in Excel, Word and Windows.

We are using Windows XP

How can we get it to show Monday 4th January and not Monday 1st April.
