After a mail merge, I need to edit a letter. After I make
the chnage and hit enter, it takes anywhere from 5-30
seconds for the change to take effect. Why so long?

Well there could be a number of reasons.  How old is your machine?  How many programs do you have running while making changes?  When is the last time you defragged your hard drive?  All of these can be factors to speed, but honestly I don't think that 5-30 seconds is a long time at all.  Think about 50 years ago when making copies meant having a typing pool hammer out the document on a typewriter; now we press print.
