I have a table in Word XP that I am merging to from
excel.  The field is small but my merge code is long.  So
I can not see the merge field to edit it.  I have been
increasing the size of the field and then editing and
returning it to the orginial size.  With over 300 codes
this takes to long.  Any ideas.

I suspect what is workable is rather a personal matter on this one. I think
I would probably go for something like:
a. create and apply a paragraph style to all the paragraphs I wanted to
work with
b. when I want to edit the field codes, change the paragraph style to have
a very small font size (say 4pt) and zoom the display to 500%
c. when I have finished editing, change the style back tot he font size I
want
d. switch to Normal view if I have trouble navigating around the table
