Edit excel file through word mail merge (XP)

Editing the mail merge data source in Word XP only works
when the data source file is a Word file as well.

Editing an excel file that way is not possible. The edit
button is greyed out in a Word XP mail merge file when
data soure is excel.

My Open data source is not grayed out, when I select to open data source nothing happens.
